Catherine Garley's Story

I attended SHS from 1974-78. It was the first year that Stroman had Raider Belle Reserves. I was actually living in the Victoria High School district and was very interested in Drill Team at the time. Being African American with a Spanish decent, I didn't like the idea of wearing the blonde wig that was required. So I used my grandmothers address to enroll in Stroman High. In 1974, Ms. Johnson was the Raider Bell Director, ya'll remember her? Then she was replaced by Mrs. Susan Taylor. This lady was the funniest, most inventive lady I had ever met. She took the Belles to a whole different level. Mr . Nichols was principle in 1978(my senior year). The Varsity Football team was looking at a lean year. They were small, but determined. We had lost our star players the year before. Our star running back; Russell Bates and Gorgeous Greg Woods(my big brother, or so he though) had graduated and left for college. We had to rely on smaller, scrappier players like Ricky Woods(my brother from another mother; we grew up country together) and Greg McNary( my love interest, who didn't know I was alive) LOL. The Highlight of the Season was a 42-0 victory over the Sandcrabs. My life was consummed with thoughts of enjoying my last year at Stroman, seeing Victoria Tx in my rearview mirror and of course: RAIDER BELLES(The Pride of Victoria). I was always liberal and forward thinking. My circle of friends was a wide spectrum. I hung out with everybody and enjoyed it. Brenda Henry James, Cheryl Reed, and Loretta Young were my girls, but Kim Greer, Emlee Harwell, and Brenda Heller, what can I say, they we...Expand for more
re my roaddoggs, we were wild! Slyvia Figarora and Ida Jiminez were pure class and you had to love em. I was so happy to hear Sylvia married the love of her life, Noe in 1980, they were made for each other. Noah and Danny were a close nit part of our group. We hung out in Riverside Park, attended games together, ate at the Pizza Inn on the Houston Hwy and partied at Sun Valley. We were proud to be apart of the Elite Honor Guard(the Cream of the Honor Drill Team).. We thought nothing could ever tear us apart, but in January of 1978 we lost Ida Jiminez in a horrible auto accident. It made us grow up in ways we never thought possible. I graduated in 1978, and enrolled in Central State University in Business School, attended for 2 years, did a little cheerleading for the Broncos, that came to a short-end when Terry Jones(linebacker 290 lbs hit me on the field, while making an interception). That was quite enough of the cheerleading life for me.. I came back to Victoria in 1980, but was only home for a short while. I left again, to attend College in California. Graduated from Stanford University. Met my husband, Leonard Tobia in 1983. I got my degree in Advanced Transportation, I have enjoyed a career as a Federal Conductor and also have a Class A License and have traveled all over the USA, Mexico and Canada (I was a bit of a tomboy, but a classy one) Since then, I have aquired 4 sons, 8 grandchildren, and am currently in the process of moving back down South with my husband. Louisana though, not Texas. My mom and dad still reside in Victoria TX, I Iook forward to seeing some of ya'll when I visit.
